Tribute to Philip A. Gizzi W8IIV
October 30, 1920 - February 21, 2010

 

Major Philip A. "Phil" Gizzi, age 89, of North Canton, passed away on Sunday February 21, 2010 in the comfort of his home surrounded by his family. He was born in Youngstown, OH on October 30, 1920 to the late James and Clara Gizzi. Phil attended the Air Force Academy, Walsh College and Malone College. He proudly served our country in the United States Air Force during WWII where he flew supplies and troops to the front lines and flew wounded troops to the hospitals. While in the Air Force, he earned the Distinguished Flying Cross and three Air Medals. Phil also served in the Ohio National Air Guard where he retired with the rank of Major. He retired from the Akron Canton Airport in 1977, following 30 years of employment as the Central Tower Chief. Phil was the Coordinator and Board Member of the Akron Canton Airport Memorial Park. He was a Ham Radio operator and enjoyed collecting toy trains and stamps. He was a member of North Canton Church of Christ, the Lions Club and East Central Ohio Pilots Associates. Phil was an aviation history expert and a meticulous record keeper and organizer. He will be deeply missed and never forgotten.
