Famous DX'er Don Wallace W6AM back in college. Notice the ex: 6OC, that was his first call sign in 1912 from Long Beach, CA. Don's father was a banker. He had plenty of help from his parents with his wireless endeavors, funds for college and his hobby. He took off from the ground floor and won honors and awards for DX and operating skills. He had his Army career in WW1 and then the whole world opened up to him.
