KJ6DO/KH7S 1982 Suitland Is.
Pirate Operation
Yes, that infamous island is in
the news again (1982), as the QSL cards are finally appearing.
We received a letter from the nefarious Brent White, in which he
said, "The island that you unwittingly made so popular
was finally driven off the bands by your probing
questions and triangulation efforts.
All contacts were duped and each unique call gets a
souvenir, most through bureaus. Most limericks are unprintable,
certainly the good ones are, .... NUFF SAID.
"From the depths of the Northern Pacific came
announcements -- none too specific. Then Suitland island
appeared, all the DXers cheered, and the pileups were really
terrific.
K6FUV proved quite a sleuth as he strived to determine the truth.
When Lee KH6BZF and AU said "The heading's not true
--"Bill announced :"Suitland Island's a spoof."
Over 2000 calls were logged in the spree, with more and more
shouting "This cannot be". So when Lee announced
"Hoax" To all the good folks --Suitland Island said
"Seventy three."
For 2000 DXers who broke through the pile, some of them frowning,
but most with a smile, write your bureau today. There's a card on
the way.
Suitland Island has vanished, with style!"
And so it goes, with yet another credit for the Worked All Slims
Award under your belt.
Our congratulations to the guys who reminded us once again that
this is really just a hobby, and just for fun.
