He was educated at Southern Illinois University (BA) and Bradley Univesity (MA). In 1963 he was a teacher and sponsor of the Barrington Amateur Radio Society (WA9EDW, later K9HWI), Barrington High School, Barrington, Illinois. In World War II PFC Lager served in the U.S. Army.
