W9IIL/K7 1946 Alaska

The operator Lt. Velio Salvatore "Val" Buccicone, later W8AFA and W9HL, perhaps more.
He was a member of the  military unit 713th Signal Air Warning Company, which was located at Attu (Alexai Point), Shemya Island, Alaska.
The unit was stationed at this location  during the period 1944-1946.
In 1966 he was a solid state QRP enthusiast. During a 3 month period he worked 45 states for WAS and 35 DX countries using a dipole.
He helped W0RSP, ex-K8EEG, get on the right path with QRP. The schematic and comments of his rig were eventually published in the February 1970 issue of "The Milliwatt".
Velio's father was Dario Buccicone. He came to America from Italy in 1921. Velio was born in 1921 in Rivisondoli, Italy. He and his mother came to America in 1925. Other children were born in America.
Velio's father died in 1994 at the age of 97. He was an engineer who had 155 patents and who created many machines used in the steel and automotive industries.
Velio must have been in the business with his father, because he had numerous patents for handling sheet metal.

Velio W9IIL was born March 26, 1921 and  became a Silent Key November 20, 1993.
