KH6SHS 1941 American Samoa

LCDR Jerry J. Petranek, USN (retired), W8DEW, W4KQJ, W3HWG, W9SEC and probably more, Silent Key (1917-2013).

His call KH6SHS was the first KH6 call sign issued to a station in Samoa.

He enlisted in the Navy at age 18 and held all enlisted ratings as a radioman up to an aviation chief electronics technician.
He retired from the Navy as a Lt. Cdr. at Barber's Point, Oahu, Hawaii, in 1959 after 24 years of service. He was a veteran of World War II and Korea. He graduated from Western Michigan University in 1963 with a bachelor of science degree. He taught high school in Elk Rapids, Mich., from 1963 to 1971 and in Bloomingdale, Mich., from 1973 to 1979. He spent his last years in Arizona as W8DEW.
