KC4AAA 2001 Antarctica
Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station
The operator was Franklin E
"Skip" Withrow III, WB0BBE.
The following is from Skip, WB0BBE:
I did three summers at South Pole (93/94, 97/98/, 01/02) and 8
weeks at Palmer Station (KC4AAC) as a communications technician.
The military was pretty much out of Antarctica by that point
except for air ops.
I worked for the support contractor to the National
Science Foundation.
My duties included repair and maintenance of all
the communications systems from the telephone system,
HF, VHF, and UHF radio systems, and microwave satellite
systems.
I was involved with the first real-time internet connection to
South Pole in 93/94 (via GOES 2/3) and assembled the
Intelsat ground station at Palmer (2002).
I did lots of operating from KC4AAA, a fair bit from KC4AAC, and
even some from KC4USV when transiting through McMurdo.
