KC4USB 1940 Antarctica
Elmer Lamplugh
While researching Elmer Lamplugh, USN, one of the operators of NY2AE (U.S. Submarine Base, Coco Solo, Canal Zone) I discovered that he was also the chief radio operator at East Base (Palmer Peninsula, Antarctica) during the 3rd Byrd Antarctic Expedition (1939-1940). This photo shows him operating from the station prior to moving from a tent into the main building. They first setup in tents until the prefab buildings were raised. Photo taken March 25, 1940. He was also one of the ops at KC4USB at the same time.
While a civilian contractor in Seoul, Korea in 1955 Lamplugh was hit and killed by a U. S. Air Force truck.
He was also W1LWD, ex-W6CTV.
