The operator was Dr. Gene Elvin Johnson, who was a missionary doctor with the Christian Church, Disciples of Christ. He served in The Congo from 1957 to 1971 and now lives in Galesburg, Illinois.
He had a call sign, WB9TRU, but when he got back from Congo in 1971 he bought a transceiver, put up a quad antenna on a tower, but never got on the air a single time, and after a couple of years he sold all the equipment. Out in Congo there was never anything else to do at night, but here he had so many other interests there was no time for ham radio.
He is the author of the book "Congo Centennial: The Second Fifty Years."
