YS1FM 1932 El Salvador

Fred Mejia, FMH, YS1FM was the first ham in all Central America. He started around 1922 using a broadcasting station. After ending the regular hours, he switched coils and happily went on 40 meters. I met him when I was beginning my ham life around 1960. He was still active on 20 meter AM fighting against the "Donald Duck invasion" as he called the SSB. I convinced his son, who was a friend of mine, to present him a SSB rig for his birthday. He got angry and refused to use it.
