G5CY 1929 England
Operator: J.E. Cory became a SK in 1962 aged 61.
My father was born 1899 and
volunteered for the Army in 1915 - he lied about his age but they
took him as he was only a few months short of his 17th birthday.
He was badly gassed in the war, was stationed at Ypres which the
British lads called "wipers" and taken prisoner-of-war.
He was my sort of build at 6' 1" i.e. skinny but when he
came home his mother didn't recognise him as he weighed only 84
pounds!
I've travelled the world but in his day it was a thrill for young
men to talk to others only 40 - 60 miles away by
"wireless"!
I don't know when he was granted his callsign but in those days
you could pick any available and so he chose G5CY because it
matched our family name of CorY.
After the East Coast floods of 1953 and afterwards, my father
G5CY was very active on 160 metres (2 Meg) with his mobile rig in
a Commer van.
I have no proof but he always maintained that he was the first
ham to make contact with someone in the Azores from the UK based
in Lincolnshire.
