5N0WRE 1988 Nigeria

Larry Eicher, KB4EPK, worked with USAID at the U.S. Embvassy in Lagos, Nigeria from 1985-1988. He was given a reciprocal license from Nigerian officials to operate 5N0WRE during that time. His QSL manager was K4JZQ, an old Elmer, who has since passed away. Larry recently obtained permission to use K4JZQ as his new vanity call to honor his friend's memory. He also operated as 9G1TL from Ghana. Larry and his wife, both retired diplomats, now live in Charlottesville, Virginia. Larry and his wife did volunteer work at the Alaska Raptor Center in Sitka, Alaska for 2-3 weeks for 6 summers over the last 10 years.

The photo shows Larry handling an injured immature Bald Eagle (under 5 years old) at the Alaska Raptor Center in Sitka, Alaska. Larry added a few comments that describe their joy in working with the Alaska Raptor Center: We love Sitka and thoroughly enjoy working with these fine people. I've added a couple of photos that might better conveys what we did -- as an injured eagle is brought in (the photo you first sent to me) the eagle is really a mess [the first photo]. But if we can save them (and that's what the Raptor Center is all about) then you have the great joy of being able to actually release that same eagle back into the wild. Having one of these big birds (immature female under 5 years old) take off from your hands is a real thrill. Both photos were taken by my wife as the eagle flew directly over her head. That bird was determined to "be outta here fast."
