VR6AA 1947 Pitcairn Island

Nelson Damian Dyett, ZL2FR and VR6AA, Silent Key (1913-2011).

Dyett, ZL2FR, volunteered to establish and operate a radio station on Pitcairn with his own equipment for the New Zealand Naval Board. He was accepted, because he was married to Maud Young, a Pitcairn girl. In 1943 with the war escalating with Japanese from the South and South West Pacific an upgrade of radio frequency on Pitcairn to communicate with ships was requested by the United States and New Zealand and Nelson Dyett was one of the members of the expedition sent to Pitcairn to set up the new station. The station was kept in operation until October 1945. When the New Zealanders were withdrawn in November 1945, the Western Pacific High Commission retained the station for its own use.

Dyett was the operator of Pitcairn Island radio station ZBP until 1948.
