VR6ID 1988 Pitcairn Island

YL Operator: Irma Christian

According to the July 2016 issue of The Pitcairn Log, Mrs. Irma Doreen Warren Christian, who we know as VR6ID, became a Silent Key circa 2016.

Irma Christian has died on Pitcairn Island. Just as this issue of the Log was going to print, we learned of the passing of Irma Doreen Warren Christian. She was born on Pitcairn Island on June 3, 1927, the daughter of Philip Anderson Calvert Warren and Emily Mabel Christian. She married Benjamin Norman Christian, son of Thornton Gilbert Christian and Marian Edith Young. Irma was one of Pitcairn’s ham radio operators. In 1994 she was elected the first female elder in the Pitcairn Seventh-day Adventist Church. She was also  the  “ship  recorder”  who  wrote  the Pitcairn Miscellany’s Shipping Report.
Our condolences to her family.

Here is a souvernier envelope filled with a beautiful assortment of Pitcairn postage stamps cancelled on 24 September 1949.
These were a major source of revenue for the tiny island nation and are still very popular among philatelic societies today.
I bring your attention to the signature of Mr. Anderson Warren appearing in the top left hand corner.
Probably Irma Doreen’s father, he may have singlehandidly engineered the profitable business of producing the sovereign postage and managing its Post Office and revenue.
