VQ9TED 1959 Seychelles Island
1. DXpedition to Seychelles:
CQ Magazine, dated December, 1959, has an article on a DXpedition
to Mahe, Seychelles, with the callsign VQ9ERR. This DXpedition
took place in August, 1959. The article, which is entitled
"One Thousand Miles From Anywhere" and was written by
Robbie VQ4ERR/VQ9ERR, mentions team-member Ted Kelsall VQ9TED as
a "brand new novice", and states that his first-ever
QSO was made on this DXpedition. He made 50 QSOs using his own
call. VQ9TED was normally resident in Kenya, and later became
5Z4TO.
2. Indian Ocean islands tour:
Further to the above note on the DXpedition to Mahe, VQ9TED was
also QRV as follows:
CQ Magazine July, 1960: "VQ9TED will operate from August
22nd (AHJ: 1960) to 1961-03-13". He will also go to Aldabra,
Mauritius, Chagos and other groups of islands in the Indian Ocean
during this period". Later in the same issue: "VQ9TED
is hoping to sail among the islands in the Indian Ocean and will
operate SSB ashore if separate country status is granted".
CQ Magazine August, 1960: "VQ9TED is leaving Mombasa about
August 19 to visit Seychelles and possibly also the
Aldabras".
CQ Magazine September, 1960: "Ted, VQ9TED, who has been most active on SSB with a KWM-1 Maritime Mobile, has embarked on a sentimental journey, enhanced by his newly acquired amateur license. Ted was an enthusiastic SWL for many years before getting his call last year. Recently he decided to make an 8 month's tour by sea, revisiting scenes of his early youth. And what better way to share his joy with his many new friends on the air than to take along his rig and provide contacts with some new rare spots? So Ted's itinerary will include The Seychelles, The Aldabras, the Amirantes and Chagos Archipelago from August to December. He will return to the Seychelles for the Christmas holidays and will embark again on January 3 for Pakistan and Kashmir and India after which he will re-visit the islands on his return home".
CQ Magazine, March, 1961: "At this writing VQ9TED had still not left Seychelles to visit those rare islands Agalega, Amirante and Farguhar.
