W2OAA/J8 1946 Seoul, Korea
Harry Paston W2OAA was the first postwar amateur operating from South Korea. After VJ Day, Harry got on signing AK1MO (Asia - Korea). Once authorization came from SCAF (Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces) Harry signed W2OAA/J8, and later W2OAA/HL. A lot of hams got on the air from various countries as soon as the war ended with modified surplus equipment, well before the FCC or SCAF authorized amateur radio to resume. They used home made calls, modifications of their own call, or their callsign portable. The FCC lectured several of the service men as they returned home but didn't suppend anyones license.
