William B. Prechtl, 83, of Bridge City, Texas passed away on
September 23, 2007 at his home.
He was born in Elmira, New York on October 13, 1923. He served in
the U.S. Navy during WWII as a radio operator on motor gunboats
in the South Pacific.
At the end of the war he joined the newly formed OSS, Office of
Strategic Services, later becoming the CIA.
Working as a communications specialist in the Middle East,
Australia and contract agent in Europe, he was recalled back into
the Navy for the Korean Conflict working on the spy ships of the
period.
Upon discharge, he rejoined the CIA and after over 24 years
working around the world, Bill settled in Bridge City and ended
his working career as a Radio Electronics Officer aboard tankers
in Texaco's marine fleet.
After retiring, Bill donated his time to Bridge City and personal
interest. He served for years on the Bridge City Planning &
Zoning Commission as an active member and president.
He also worked with others on the building of the Bridge City
Library.
He was a lifetime member of the American Radio Relay League and
active member of its local chapter serving in various positions
including president.
