Hiram Percy Maxim was an American radio pioneer and inventor. He
was co-founder of the American Radio Relay League in 1914.
Hiram seen the need for relay stations to pass messages via
amateur radio. The relaying of messages allowed them to be sent
farther than any single station could do.
He held the amateur call signs SNY, 1WH, 1ZM, 1AW, and later
W1AW, which is now the ARRL Headquarters club station call sign.
His rotary spark-gap transmitter "Old Betsy" can be
seen at ARRL Headquarters.
Hiram had many patents, wrote books, and hosted many lectures.
