From my history research into the calls of the Georgia Tech Radio Club, the first call issued in 1912 was 4XG and not a 'Y' educational call.
The reason an experimental license was requested, according to the Georgia Tech catalog, was that the experimental license had no limitations on power or frequency.
They were required to not interfere with other stations. I believe that pre-WW1 the amateur work was more educational than hobby and it was linked to the Electrical Engineering curriculum.
4YA was issued after WW1 but the club lost it around 1924 and changed to 4AV in 1925. It is worth noting that ALL 'Y' calls in the 4th call district disappeared at the same time.
The multiple losses may be a coincidence since a student ham during this time said there was no active club in the fall of 1924.
The license may have merely lapsed since annual renewals were required during this time.
