opr. Edith E. Rotch *1874-1969* 1RO - 1ZR - W1ZR - Edith was a
fine athlete, skating trophies and tennis awards; On three
occasions she won the U.S. Women's National Championship; mixed
doubles in 1908 (with Nate Niles and in women's doubles with
Hazel Hotchkiss Wightman in 1909 and 1910.
Edith earned her commercial first grade license in 1917 and her
first amateur license 1RO in 1919. Edith was a junior inspector
first world war Signal Corps daytime and evenings a code
instructor and examining officer. Hobbies included dancing,
skating, tennis, sailing, bowling and bridge. She was so expert
at the code that when the first Boston Radio Show took place in
1922, it was she, along with District One radio inspector Kolster
(1RI) who judged the code sending events. Edith was also an
examiner for the old Postal Telegraph Company, known for her high
speed sending and in her spare time, she was a member of the
Greater Boston Spark Coil Club. She was active in ham radio
throughout her entire life including Red Cross service in WW2. W8SU 2014
