W8EFW 1933 Cleveland Heights, Ohio
W8EFW was also known as Paul
Cornell, and he was active in radio for over 60 years. As his
daughter told me, his whole life was radio. He was also a WWII
veteran, serving in the South Pacific, where he cobbled together
a "foxhole radio" using a razor blade for a detector
and salvaged parts for the rest. It was basically a simple
crystal set, but he was able to pick up Armed Forces Radio with
it. Fortunately he brought it back with him, and his daughter
still has it. It may be the only surviving example of an original
"foxhole radio". From what I have learned about him, he
seems to have been an all around nice guy, active in the
community and charitable. He passed a way a couple of years ago.
The neat thing about this QSL card is that he was only 18 at the
time, so he was just starting out on what would be a lifetime
passion.
