Charles Edward Whartenby, 5JR, was born in Ohio in 1901 and settled in Enid, Oklahoma.
In 1921 he was licenced with the callsign 5JR, which he soon abandoned for 5ZM, 5XBD, 5AFA, and W5ARL.
