3NF 1926 Easton, Pennsylvania

Edward "Ed" Hart, Jr. held the following calls: 3NF, W3NF, W2ZVW, W5RE, K2FB and last, N4KB; Silent Key (1910 - 1988).

Brother George Hart, W3AMR was later W1NJM, a well known person on the ARRL's staff; Silent  Key (1913 - 2013).

I’m extensively familiar with the history of brothers Ed, W3NF and George Hart, W1NJM. Ed was a founder of my local ARC, the Delaware-Lehigh Amateur Radio Club. George went on to be an ARRL Official and invented the National Traffic System and unfortunately died at 99 y/o in a CT nursing home about 5 years ago just a few weeks before I was scheduled to interview him for a Club milestone anniversary event. As teens, the brothers played legendary pranks on each other like electrifying doorknobs at the top of a steep, narrow, staircase (with no landing) that lead to their 2nd floor bedrooms with very high voltages. Their dad was a famous Lafayette professor. The whole family is buried in a plot minutes from me here in Easton, PA.

There is a scan out of an early log book. You will see logs of contacts signed "Geo" which were done when George was operating my father's station before he was licensed.  George had no ability in the technical space and it took him many years to pass the technical sections of the test.   Even so, my father told the story of the helpful examiner who made it all work.  From the time of these logs when they were teenagers, to the day he died, George always signed documents as Geo. The character of that signature did not change through his entire life.  The unsigned entries are those of my father.
This is a photo of my father taken at his station at 51 Washington St., Phillipsburg, NJ in 1952 when licensed as W2ZVW.  His age would have been 42.  Photo taken by Clarence Snyder, W3PYF.
They were both great and caring people, and I can still hear their stories and voices even in my 80th year.  I miss them both very much, and appreciate your interest in their role in the early days of amateur radio.
73, Paul Hart
