1AWE 1924 Providence, Rhode Island

The operator was Norman Horace Miller, W1AWE, ex-1AWE.
In the 1930s he owned a radio service/repair business.
He was born June 10, 1904 in Rhode Island and died July 10, 1980 in Rhode Island.

I just discovered one of my Elmer's QSL cards on hamgallery. I met Norman when I was eleven years old, one of the first hams I ever met. Shortly afterwards he gave me a stack of about two dozen QST's to read and I devoured every page, over and over.. I last saw him when I was twelve years old. I never knew he was licensed in the 20's, nor did I know that he was a DXer in the 20's. I always smiled when I heard him on the bands. He was CW only, and strictly a DXer.  He always sent his call as  W1AW E  with an extra space before the E.
Norman was also a member of my first radio club -- the Providence Radio Assn, then 1LI (1925) and now W1OP. Norman was only 19 years old when he sent that 1924 QSL printed on a post office penny post card, probably not unusual for that era. He was living with his parents in the house where lived his entire life since birth. W3LPL
