KZ0DX 1979 Canal Zone
This call KZ0DX was issued for
contests only in 1977 and perturbed the FCC immensely. They wrote
the License Branch Chief, stating only KZ5 applied to the Canal
Zone. He suggested they take it up with his boss, the Governor of
the Canal Zone, duly appointed by the President! Mr.Manthorne
gave me a copy of the letter and told me not to worry about it.
So in 1979, after we had been issued our HP calls, I requested
KZ0DX for prefix hunters since the Canal Zone would become a
deleted country effective October 1, 1979. So I alternated using
both calls from July-September 30, 1979. I also was the last
person to be issued a KZ license prior to the deletion of the
Canal Zone.
