KZ5QRN 1973 Canal Zone
The operator was Mark Michael
Schimmenti, U.S. Navy, KZ5QRN and WN6BBC, later WA6BBC, KZ5QR and
possibly other call signs.
He was born April 19, 1952 in San Diego, California.
He is now living in W4-land, but I have not found a different
call sign for him. W5KNE
When I was KZ5BP and one of the
ops at KZ5NG (1973 - '75 during my Navy days), Mark would visit
the Ham Shack often.
He badly wanted to get his ticket but he could not get a KZ5
callsign without having a USA license.
So, he took some leave, went home to CA, took the Novice test and
was assigned WN6BBC.
Upon his return to the Canal Zone, I suggested to Mark that he
request KZ5QR for his Canal Zone callsign.
The KZ5 rules stated he could have any unassigned callsign
however, if his USA license class was Novice, he would have to
append an "N" to the assigned callsign until he
upgraded.
Hence, Mark was assigned KZ5QRN. To my knowledge KZ5QRN is the
one and only Q-signal callsign ever assigned.
You can imagine how popular he was on the air. K4EU
