Entry in a 1944 callbook: D4BUF Werner Slawyk Berlin-Zehlendorf Schlehdornweg 38. Slawyk and his school buddy Richard Dargatz (later DL1XA) got interested in radio around 1920. Even the building of radio receivers was prohibited at the time in Germany. Slawyk build a detector receiver and installed it on the family toilet to conceal it. Early on Slawyk started transmitting became quickly a very skilled code operator, mastering 20 wpm without any problems. Slawyk and Dargatz used their radio link to exchange homework. From 1947 until to his death in 1955 Slawyk was head of Norddeich radio DAN, one of the most important coastal radio stations. In 1950 Slawyk co-founded the VfDB, the club of the radio amateurs of the German telecom. He served as the president of the VfDB.
