Dr. Wilhelm Ludolf Schmitz, DE
0072, "MARS", since 1925: KP6, K4ACI, EK4ACI, D4ACI,
QRT after 1933. Dr. Schmitz was one of the first phone stations
appearing on the air in Germany. His transmissions under the
mysterious call sign "Mars" became legendary during a
time when transmitting was strictly prohibited in Germany. He
became a member of the "Verein der Funkfreunde Mülheim/Ruhr
in 1924. He then moved to Bonn where he took a position as
assistant professor at the Institute of Physics at the University
of Bonn. When the DASD was founded in 1927, Schmitz was one of 56
founding members of the DASD and he served as the delegate for
the "Rheinland" in the club. When Hitler came to power
on January, 30, 1933 all radio licenses were revoked. W.L.
Schmitz, D4ACI withdrew from amateur radio and resigned from the
DASD.
