OD5AO / PK5AO 1932 Koepang (Kupang), Dutch Timor
Pre-war Koepang was on the
island of Dutch Timor (western side, eastern side was Portuguese
Timor).
DXCC for the Dutch East Indies had:
Java (PK1, 2, 3), Sumatra (PK4), Netherlands Borneo (PK5) and
Celebes & Molucca (PK6). Netherlands New Guinea was also PK6.
There were lots of islands not included those four PK1 - 6 DXCC
countries including Dutch Timor. Looking at the map, the closest
DXCC island(s) is Molucca (Maluku) (PK6) so who knows why he was
using PK5. Netherlands Borneo (PK5) is not close to Dutch Timor.
Maybe he was originally operating from there.
His prefix OD - Oceania Dutch (East Indies) I suspect.
I'm not sure if he should be included on the Netherlands Borneo page. My reason is that his call PK5AO was also listed on the card and that is Netherlands Borneo. The stamp also indicated Netherlands Indies. However, until someone can determine what country Koepang, Dutch Timor should be listed under in 1932, pre DXCC, I'll leave the card here.
Koepang shares the island with the independent nation Timor Leste (East Timor). I believe Kupang now counts as Indonesia for DXCC purposes. K8CX
