W5HDF, Silent Key (1916-1981)
He was first licensed in 1935. He was a shipboard operator until
1941, when he joined the CAA as a chief communicator. Fabrian
Alva Griffin, son of Thomas Alva Griffin, Jr. and Sadie Grace
Joy, was born October 21, 1916 in Beaumont, Texas and died
November 24, 1981 in Matagorda County, Texas.
He left Swan Island sometime in 1951. In 1946 the CAA installed a
non-directional navigation beacon radio station for guidance of
Caribbean traffic (call sign SWA, on 407 kHz). Swan Island
communicated with Miami via a radioteletype circuit (call sign
WSG).
