K9PL is writing an article for the January 2012 issue of the K9YA Telegraph discussing The New York Times (U2UO) and San Francisco Examiner's (6ARD) commercial use of the amateur bands to transmit news traffic and bulletins. In November 1928, due to pressure from the ARRL and individual amateurs, the Federal Radio Commission revoked the newspapers' amateur radio licenses.
